What is the cheapest way to heat a huge room with no gas connection?

Question by Simon W: What is the cheapest way to heat a huge room with no gas connection?
I recently moved into a huge flat within a massive 1870’s stone built High-Victorian property. The propety has no gas connection. I spend most of my time in the living room which is approx 18’x15’x15′ and the only heat is from an old storage heater fixed to the wall. This suffices for now but will struggle in winter. I have had differing advice about the cheapest/most cost efficient way to heat the room – from portable oil filled electric heaters to calor gas heaters. Which way to go?

It depends largely on the cost of various fuels in your area but I can give you a few suggestions that will lower your heating costs.

1. Make sure you’re not “leaking” heat you’ve already paid for. Buy a caulking gun for a couple of dollars and several tubes of good vinyl caulking. Caulk every crack, crevice, pin hole or opening. Caulk around the windows and door frames. Be sure the weather stripping around the doors fits snugly. If the window glass is single pane, consider buying clear Acrylite or similar 1/8″ thick clear plastic you can cut to fit the panes and caulk into place.

2. If the room has a center-ceiling light fixture, replace it with a large, reversible ceiling fan and light combination. In winter, set the fan to blow upwards. This forces the warm air that gathers near the ceiling to flow outward and down the walls, creating a warm blanket of air along the walls, making the occupants feel much more cosy (and making use of the warm air at ceiling level).

3. Use a small 1500 watt or 1200 watt electric “cube” heater with a multi-speed fan that you can direct towards your legs while you are sitting in the evening. That may be all the supplemental heat you need. A good 1500 watt ceramic cube heater with multi-speed fan costs about $ 50 here in western Canada and is highly efficient. Remember, any liquid or gas-fuel appliance requires venting, it burns air you have already paid to heat and exhausts more warm air to the outside. An electric heater wastes no energy and switches on and off instantly in response to temperature rise or fall.

4. Wear warm socks and a toque in the house to minimize loss of body heat.

Question by ysab53: Need to connection a 1500 watt baseboard heater to electrical Panel?
I have 14/2 wiring and want to connect a 1500 baseboard heater to electrical panel. Do i use 2 15 amp breakers in the electrical box to get 220?. How do I connect this to the breakers?

Answer by woodtick314
Use a 2 pole 15 amp breaker. If your heater does not require a neutral, 14-2 is fine. Connect the white to one pole and the black to the other. Be sure to mark the white at both ends as a hot (usually you color it black with a marker). If a neutral is required, use 14-3. Hope this helps.

EDIT: 1500W @ 240V = 6.25A Therefore a 15A circuit is plenty.
